Can alcohol consumption cause brain atrophy?

Alcohol consumption may cause brain atrophy. Long-term, heavy alcohol consumption can lead to brain atrophy, causing patients to develop memory loss, chronic alcoholic encephalopathy, impairing the patient’s liver function, leading to alcoholic cirrhosis, or causing alcoholic peripheral neuropathy. The occurrence of this condition is all linearly related to the amount of alcohol consumed, and long-term, heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of brain atrophy in patients. In the presence of alcoholic encephalopathy, patients may clinically present with decreased cognitive function, disorientation, emotional and motor dullness, and may be seen to have limb sensory disturbances, muscle atrophy, and weakened or absent tendon reflexes. In chronic alcoholic encephalopathy, patients may exhibit severe personality changes as well as intellectual impairment.
