Headaches are a very common neurological condition. Very few people have never had a headache, and more than 90 percent of people have more than one headache per year. About 40% of the world’s population is reported to have a severe headache each year. If you come to the hospital with a headache, how can you describe your symptoms succinctly and accurately? The majority of headaches I encounter in the clinic are episodic, where the patient feels very uncomfortable during the attack, but then the headache passes and the patient “forgets the pain”. I sometimes encounter patients who come to the clinic with a headache but cannot describe what their headache is like, which can cause a lot of problems for the doctor and the next step in treatment. It is recommended that patients describe their symptoms as well as their medical history in order to achieve efficient communication between the doctor and the patient.
