What to think of Chinese medicine

On the network on whether Chinese medicine scientific debate is all over the place, there are surely hold high the banner of Chinese medicine science, for Chinese medicine shouting support; there are neutral although recognized the efficacy of Chinese medicine, and do not think Chinese medicine is pseudoscience, but also do not think that Chinese medicine science; there are also negatives hold “Chinese medicine pseudoscience theory”, do not mince words and ink to Chinese medicine said nothing, Worthless …… as a young Chinese medicine doctor, I know that the knowledge is still shallow, but still can not help but want to say a few words, talk about how the people should look at Chinese medicine: First, the correct understanding of the value of Chinese medicine Chinese medicine has value? The answer is undoubtedly yes. Practice is the only standard for testing the truth, in the Western medicine has not been introduced to China for thousands of years, the Chinese people mainly rely on what to prevent and cure diseases? Chinese medicine! Even in the highly developed Western medicine today, all over the world, such as Egypt, India, Arabia and other countries of traditional medicine are dying one after another, while the Chinese medicine is still maintaining a strong vitality. Facts speak louder than words: as early as the 17th century in France, there were published books on Chinese medicine and the use of acupuncture to treat diseases. At present, there are nearly 20 Chinese medicine research institutions in France, the publication of nearly 10 kinds of Chinese medicine academic journals. Now the United States has 48 states and 1 special zone in different forms to allow acupuncture treatment, Chinese medicine clinics have been spread throughout the United States. Even in the United Kingdom, which is famous for its conservatism in the world, the number of people who receive Chinese medicine treatment each year is more than 1 million, and there are dozens of Chinese medicine clinics in London alone. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 50,000 TCM medical institutions in more than 130 countries in the world, with more than 100,000 acupuncturists and more than 20,000 registered TCM practitioners, and about 30% of the locals and more than 70% of the Chinese people receive TCM healthcare services every year. The World Health Organization even stated clearly in the Global Strategy for the Development of Traditional Medicine in 2003 that traditional medicine, such as acupuncture and Chinese medicine, is gaining widespread attention around the world and plays an important role in human health care. Imagine: how can a medicine with no efficacy and no value be passed down for thousands of years and still be alive and well? It is important to realize that medicine is not a child’s play, it is not trivial, and it is a matter of life and death of human diseases. China’s ancient working people as well as contemporary trust in the efficacy of Chinese medicine and people will not take their “thousand gold body” joke to accept “worthless” Chinese medicine treatment? The most fundamental value of Chinese medicine lies precisely in its efficacy, and efficacy is the hard truth. It is also because of the unique and significant therapeutic effects of Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine can be passed on from generation to generation, carry forward! Second, an objective view of the problems of Chinese medicine Any discipline in the world can not be perfect, Chinese medicine is no exception. Due to the constraints of society, history, science and technology, culture and other factors, the theoretical system of Chinese medicine presents a nearly closed structure, in an awkward situation of “outsiders want to understand, can’t get in; they want to break through, can’t get out”. Many ideas and theories of Chinese medicine are rough and generalized, mostly based on intuition or experience, and “only know what they are, but not why they are”. Moreover, in terms of theoretical elaboration, there are many different opinions, each with their own viewpoints, “the public say that the public is justified and the women say that the women are justified”. As to who is justified in the end? Some of them cannot be explained by anyone, not to mention the modern medical point of view. While we recognize the excellent efficacy of Chinese medicine in treating many diseases, we should also see that Chinese medicine has its own limitations in treating diseases, and the efficacy of Chinese medicine in treating certain diseases is not good, or even completely helpless and unable to do anything about them. At the same time, we should also recognize that due to historical limitations, Chinese medicine is inevitably mixed with some dregs, and some aspects even have the color of idealism. Even the classic works of Chinese medicine are by no means the golden rule, word for word. In addition to the “hardness” of Chinese medicine itself, there are also many “weaknesses” in Chinese medicine, such as the lack of popularization and publicity of Chinese medicine among the general public, and it is surprising that there are a lot of people who do not understand Chinese medicine at all in the place where Chinese medicine originated; there is also a mechanism for training talents in Chinese medicine that is not reasonable, and there are even some aspects of idealism. The current mechanism for training talents in TCM is also not reasonable, and it is not possible to train good TCM practitioners with good clinical efficacy …… All these undoubtedly constrain the development of TCM to varying degrees, and affect the public’s view and evaluation of TCM. Third, rational examination of whether Chinese medicine is scientific For the topic of whether Chinese medicine is scientific, I think the public should be rationally examined: neither blind worship, nor easy to deny. Undeniably, Chinese medicine is a system in which both the essence and the dregs coexist. For those dregs, we should undoubtedly discard them; for the essence, we should absorb and utilize them; as for those contents which are still difficult to understand, confirm or deny, they can be put into doubt for the time being, pending further discussions and researches. For those who do not understand Chinese medicine, the public can be skeptical, but please do not jump to conclusions on Chinese medicine to be completely rejected. It is because many people do not understand Chinese medicine, and then misunderstand Chinese medicine, and thus come to the conclusion that “Chinese medicine is a pseudo-science”. Such as the theory of yin and yang and five elements of Chinese medicine, many people see “yin and yang”, “five elements” of the word is often very natural to them and “fortune-telling”, “Witchcraft” together, so they have been conclusively determined that Chinese medicine is not scientific. In fact, there is a misunderstanding here. The doctrine of yin-yang and five elements originally belonged to the category of ancient philosophy, prevalent in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, when the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine was written. Therefore, it naturally penetrated into the theoretical system of Chinese medicine, and combined with it, melting into one, forming the theory of yin-yang and five elements of Chinese medicine, which is both derived from philosophy and different. Chinese medicine has also absorbed the simple materialism and natural dialectics in the doctrine of yin-yang and five elements, which is used to construct its own theoretical system and guide clinical practice. As for “fortune-telling”, “witchcraft” and other metaphysical use of the doctrine of yin-yang and five elements, it is just like some of the wandering doctors in today’s society under the guise of traditional Chinese medicine to deceive the world and seek money and harm people’s lives. For such behavior, the public abhorrence is understandable. However, it is too arbitrary to “beat to death” TCM practitioners. As the old saying goes, “Listening to both sides is good for you, and believing in both sides is bad for you.” On the issue of how to look at Chinese medicine, I think the public should listen to the voices of all parties, on this basis, more contact and understanding of Chinese medicine, a correct understanding of the value of Chinese medicine, an objective view of the problems of Chinese medicine, to a scientific and rational attitude to scrutinize and evaluate Chinese medicine.
