Hepatitis B Pregnant Women’s Genetic Testing “New Helper” in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Suzhou Five Hospital

Since its establishment, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Suzhou Fifth People’s Hospital has provided the most professional treatment to more than 3,000 pregnant women with hepatitis B. The successful rate of interruption has reached 98%, making a great contribution to reducing the rate of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B in Suzhou. Now, in order to provide more quality services to the majority of pregnant women with hepatitis B, our hospital has taken the lead in introducing the “Automatic Nucleic Acid Isolation and Purification and Testing System” (i.e., highly sensitive HBV-DNA test), which is regarded as the “global gold standard” within the city of Suzhou. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Ma Deming, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Fifth People’s Hospital of Suzhou, China Why do we need quantitative hepatitis B virus gene testing? The hepatitis B virus gene, also known as HBV-DNA, is an indicator to determine the level of hepatitis B virus replication. The higher the level of HBV-DNA in the blood means the more viral replication and the more infectious it is. In the case of pregnant women with hepatitis B, the viral level first determines the blocking regimen for mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B. The higher the viral load, the more likely it is that liver function will be abnormal during pregnancy and the greater the chance of intrauterine infection, and the lower the success rate of mother-to-child hepatitis B interruption. Why is the “highly sensitive HBV-DNA test” the internationally recognized “gold standard”? “Conventional HBV-DNA testing can only go down to 500 IU/ml and cannot correctly detect and quantify viruses below this value. The “High Sensitivity HBV-DNA Test” can reach a lower limit of 20 IU/ml, covering all genetic subtypes and avoiding false negatives and false positives, so the method is extremely accurate and internationally recognized as the “gold standard”. Who is more suitable for the “High Sensitivity HBV-DNA Test”? I. Pregnant women who are undergoing antiviral treatment for hepatitis B during pregnancy II. Pregnant women who are suspiciously positive on the traditional HBV-DNA test (i.e., pregnant women with hepatitis B virus levels around 500 IU/ml) III.
