How long does a gout attack usually last?

The duration of an acute gout attack is variable and varies widely among individuals. Most patients have pain lasting about 3-5 days, and longer ones can usually be relieved within 2 weeks. However, in patients with advanced age, long duration of disease, frequent acute gout attacks, and gout stones, the attack may last for more than 1 month or even longer, and may eventually turn into chronic gouty arthritis. Gout is caused by long-term hyperuricemia, resulting in the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, which induces acute inflammation of the joints and symptoms such as redness, swelling and pain in the joints, and often also induces a systemic inflammatory response with a series of manifestations such as fever. Although acute attacks of gout can be self-relieving, patients should actively seek medical attention. For patients with frequent attacks and a long history of the disease, pharmacological intervention may be required to alleviate it. During an acute attack of gout, patients need to drink a lot of water to dilute the concentration of uric acid in the blood and to increase the amount of uric acid excretion by urinating a lot. Adopt a healthy lifestyle with less alcohol and a high purine diet.
