Primary thrombocythemia generally progresses slowly, with a median survival of 10 to 15 years or more.
Reactive thrombocythemia returns to normal when the factors that make the thrombocytosis are removed, and the condition does not recur.
In patients with spontaneous thrombocytosis, survival will vary depending on the underlying blood disorder.
