Shaoyang meridian headache belongs to one of the six meridians, and its properties are mostly real and hot. Therefore, the herbs used in clinical practice are mainly drugs to clear liver and gallbladder dampness and heat, and the three common meridian inducing drugs added to Shaoyang meridian are Chai Hu, Scutellaria baicalensis and Chuanxiong, which are all meridian inducing drugs to treat headache, and different treatment methods are chosen according to the patient’s identification and typology. In addition to headache, the patient will have dizziness, dry mouth, bitter mouth, red tongue and thin yellow fur. The main treatment is Xiao Chai Hu Tang with the removal of Radix Panax and Ginseng, plus drugs to clear damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder and to calm the liver and quench the wind, with the addition of Hooked Vine, Tian Ma, and Stiffle. If the diagnosis is Shaoyang Qi stasis, the patient will show head pain, wandering, usually on both sides of the temporal region, the patient’s tongue will show light red, thin white moss, string or thin pulse, the treatment is mainly to reconcile Shaoyang, the use of Chai Hu Gui Zhi Tang. If the patient’s headache is due to heat and qi stasis in Shaoyang, the nature of the headache is obvious with swelling and pain, especially in the solar plexus, accompanied by heart trouble, bitterness in the mouth and inability to pass stool, the treatment is to detoxify Shaoyang and unblock the qi flow, and the formula used is Da Chai Hu Tang.
