What is a chalazion? A chalazion, also called a chalazion cyst. It is a localized mass located on the eyelid that varies in size from as large as a cherry to as small as a mung bean; it can occur on the upper or lower eyelid and can be concurrent on both upper and lower eyelids; it can occur singly, alternating between old and new masses, or multiple masses can occur at the same time. What are the causes of chalazion 1. There are lid glands in the eyelids, and the opening of the lid glands is located at the lid margin. The lid glands are able to secrete lipids, which form the surface layer of tears and prevent excessive evaporation of tears. If the opening of a particular lid gland is blocked, the lipid is retained in the gland, causing chronic inflammatory granuloma of the lid gland and the formation of an eyelid lump. 2. Chronic inflammatory conditions, such as blepharitis, can lead to the development of lid gland cysts, and they tend to recur. Blepharitis can be aggravated by lack of attention to eyelid hygiene, such as frequent eye rubbing in children. Certain skin types such as seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea are also more prone to blepharitis and chalazion. Is chalazion the same thing as chalazion? Chalazion is not strictly the same as chalazion. It is an acute inflammation of the eyelid glands caused by a purulent bacterial infection, similar to an abscess or boil that occurs elsewhere in the body. 2. Chalazion is a lump on the eyelid caused by obstruction of the lid gland and retention of glandular secretions. What is the treatment for chalazion 1. Most chalazions absorb on their own within a few days to a few weeks, and sometimes it takes months for them to disappear completely. 2.Heat compresses help unblock the blocked glands. 3.Eye drops with antibiotic drops, eye ointment or intracapsular injection. 4.If the cyst is large or persistent, it needs to be removed surgically. Older children and adults can be operated under local anesthesia, while young children need to be operated under general anesthesia. How to prevent chalazion 1. Daily cleaning of the eyelids, especially the lid margin area. 2. Treat blepharitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea. 3.Incorporate more vegetables and fruits and try to avoid oily and spicy foods. 4.If stubbornly recurring, you should be checked for diabetes.
