Neurofibromatosis multiforme is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by pigmented skin patches and multiple neurofibromas. Approximately 25-50% of patients have a positive family history. Patients may develop hyperpigmented skin patches shortly after birth, with a milk coffee color that gradually increases or expands. Neurofibromas are benign tumors that originate from Schwann cells and neurohypophyseal cells in the axon sheaths of nerve trunks or terminals. They may appear as round or spindle-shaped hard masses, multiple small nodules, or limited lipoma-like masses. In patients with other systemic disorders, the disease is called neurofibromatosis. The disease is most often seen in skin tissue, but can also occur in the thoracic or abdominal cavity, singly or in multiple cases. Superficial neurofibromas with envelope are not malignant. Deeper neurofibromas without envelope located in soft tissues have the possibility of malignant transformation into neurofibrosarcoma after growing up. Clinical manifestations: 1. Tumors are of different sizes and protrude from the body surface; huge ones have tips, dark skin color and soft to palpation. 2. For milk coffee spot plus tumor, there may be other clinical manifestations; nerve stem swelling may have numbness, pain or dullness of sensation in related parts.
