What is “latent syphilis”?

Start with the characteristics of syphilis. Syphilis is one of the common sexually transmitted diseases caused by the syphilis spirochete. It has a chronic clinical course, invading almost every organ of the body and producing a wide variety of signs and symptoms. This is why syphilis is also known as the “great imitator”. On the other hand, syphilis can remain asymptomatic for many years and be latent, which is what we call “latent syphilis”. Specifically, syphilis is untreated or not treated in sufficient quantity and regularly, although there are no clinical symptoms, but the syphilis serologic test is positive. At this time, the syphilis pathogen is not completely eliminated by the patient’s own immune system, but a small amount of syphilis pathogens are still hidden in the body’s tissues and organs, waiting for the opportunity to move, when the body’s resistance decreases, the pathogens will proliferate and become active again, causing the body to appear the corresponding symptoms. (Syphilis spirochetes are the pathogens of syphilis and are also called pale spirochetes because they are transparent and not easily colored.) The infection period within two years is called early latent syphilis, such patients, if not treated, about 20% have the possibility of second stage recurrent syphilis. Those infected for more than two years are called late latent syphilis, and if they do not receive treatment, about half of the patients will develop symptoms of stage III syphilis or advanced syphilis 5 to 10 years after infection – and these advanced syphilis will damage the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and skeletal system, and these systems are damaged with serious consequences. In recent years, there are more and more patients who have “hidden syphilis” or have syphilis without knowing it, mainly for the following reasons: 1, the abolition of compulsory marriage testing hidden dangers: after the abolition of compulsory marriage testing, there are many fewer people in premarital testing, in fact, it is the abolition of marriage testing. Originally this was a gateway to the discovery of syphilis, but now this gateway is gone. If one person has syphilis, it is likely to affect the other person or even the next generation after marriage. Many of my patients here only find out they or both of them have syphilis during pregnancy tests when they want to have children. 2, their own indiscriminate use of antimicrobial agents to make syphilis turn recessive: the culprit of the proliferation of recessive syphilis is the abuse of antimicrobial agents. Penicillin is the most effective drug to kill syphilis spirochetes, other antimicrobials also have some effect. The most important thing is that you should be able to get the most out of your life. 3, early syphilis treatment process with insufficient dose of drugs or treatment course is not enough: early syphilis treatment now has a very mature program, that is, with benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units divided into two sides of the buttocks muscle injection, once a week, a total of three times, 21 days continuous course of treatment, the middle shall not be interrupted, after the end of this treatment. If the penicillin allergic person, with tetracycline and other treatment. Must ensure that the dose of medication is sufficient, the course of treatment is sufficient to kill the syphilis spirochete, late syphilis also has to be hospitalized rule treatment. 4, there are also a small number of patients after non-marital sexual contact or close contact with the source of infection, no obvious symptoms, directly into the stage of latent syphilis. In the later various examinations, unpredictably and passively found to be seropositive for syphilis. Finally, sexual intercourse should be prohibited during treatment, and the infectious source and partner should be examined or treated together. After treatment, periodic re-examinations should also be conducted to find out if the infection is cured or recurring. To emphasize, as long as the person is exposed to the syphilis pathogen, the person can be repeatedly infected many times.
