A new study published in the online edition of the Journal of Personality found that although only the first few months of marriage are the honeymoon period, love and romance can have a long-term and lasting positive effect on a person, according to the Daily Mail. Jena and Kassel, psychologists at the University of Germany, found that romantic relationships can have a positive impact on the personality of young adults and can even reduce neuroticism. “We also found that adults in more stable romantic relationships also had more stable personalities.” The researchers analyzed 245 couples between the ages of 18-30 to study the link between neuroticism and their satisfaction with their mutual relationships. The scientists asked participants to imagine some virtual scenarios and studied their reactions at that point. “This is very important to the study because neurotic people also react differently to different influences from the outside world,” said one researcher. ”For example, they react more strongly to negative external stimuli and are more inclined to express a negative reaction to ambiguous situations than a positive or neutral one.” The researchers also found that a person who has a more long-term, stable romantic relationship will show less negative emotions when faced with problems. The researchers added, “Having a partner will indirectly change a person’s thought structure and perception when faced with negative changes, allowing for positive experiences and emotions.”
