A CT brain examination in people with psychiatric disorders can be used to diagnose or rule out the presence of organic lesions in the brain, but may be of limited use in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. This is because some psychiatric disorders do not have obvious structural changes in the brain. In this case, it is up to the doctor to make a judgement in conjunction with the diagnostic criteria for each psychiatric disorder, and CT is generally only useful as an aid to diagnosis.
