A normal person who suddenly becomes mentally disordered may be suffering from an organic mental disorder, such as traumatic brain injury, central nervous system infection, also known as encephalitis. It may also be seen in somatic infections, such as syphilis or venereal disease, which may also present with psychiatric symptoms, but the patient may often also have impaired consciousness. Another may also be seen in functional psychiatric disorders, such as hysterical patients who are subjected to such mental stimuli or psychological suggestion may suddenly develop psychosis, speech disorders or emotional outbursts. There are also acute episodes of schizophrenia or mania that can have this sudden psychotic disorder. Some patients with depression may also have a sudden acute attack, such as depressive rigidity or a sudden change to mania. Patients with very severe anxiety may also appear to be psychotic and may be very nervous, fearful, panicky, and fidgety.
