Their pain you must understand

Last year I met a depressed patient, a little girl, who was brought by her father when she came to see the doctor. After examination, I found that the little girl was severely depressed and had a high possibility of suicidal tendency. Simply prescribed some medicine and left.         I was saddened that the little girl’s family did not realize the great danger of depression because they lacked knowledge of depression and other mental illnesses, and treated the symptoms of indifference, laziness, and reduced ability to study and work as a personal character of the mentally ill. Some families are afraid that their family will be known by the society and always try to hide… How should family members of mentally ill patients treat and care for mentally ill patients properly? Some families are afraid of hiding the fact that they have a mentally ill person in their family. Some of them blame the doctor’s skills when they see that the treatment is not effective and want to find another one. Some discharged the patient prematurely and tried to find another remedy. Some blindly believe in some false advertisements in the press and rumors in the society, and go thousands of miles to seek medical treatment. Some do not hesitate to spend money to buy “supplements” for patients. This kind of mentality seriously interferes with the patient’s early systemic treatment and does more harm than good. The root cause of this mentality is the lack of general knowledge about mental health, the stigma and fear of mental illness. So how should family members deal with mental abnormalities in the right way? First, the nature and extent of the mental abnormality should be clarified. If certain strange signs are found to exist, the family should promptly consult a psychologist or psychiatrist to find out the nature and extent of the mental abnormality and seek the doctor’s advice on how to deal with it. Secondly, grab time to get the patient to seek medical attention as soon as possible without delay or avoidance. Do not pray to the gods or ask witch doctors or gods to play trigrams, otherwise not only will the patient suffer physically and mentally, but more importantly, the treatment will be delayed, delaying the disease and making it more difficult to cure the disease. Third, do a good job of home care and give psychological support. Family care includes not only taking care of the patient’s life and urging him/her to take medication as prescribed by the doctor, but more importantly, giving psychological encouragement and support to the patient. Family members are the closest contacts of psychiatric patients and the most important psychological protection resource. The attitude of the family has a close relationship with the timeliness, systematization and success of the treatment. Family members should fully understand the various pathological words and actions of the psychiatric patient, care for the patient, respect the patient’s personality, give emotional support and spiritual comfort, let the patient feel the warmth of the family, maintain a good mood and state of mind, which will play a good role in promoting the recovery of the disease.
