Why do I need to take medication for a long time?

We know that psychiatric disorders can be divided into many categories, such as mood disorders (bipolar disorder, depression), schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, anxiety disorders, etc. Since the causes of many mental illnesses are unknown, with possible biogenetic and psychosocial causes, treatment of mental illnesses can only be symptomatic in most cases. Many psychiatric patients have to adhere to long-term, or even lifelong, medication. When many patients hear that they have to take medication for a long time or even for the rest of their lives, the thought immediately comes to their mind: “Isn’t my life over? I’m afraid I’ll never be happy in my life.” Is that really the case? I often tell my patients or their families that the most important purpose of life is to be happy. After saying this for a long time, I have had people retort to me that often, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t change the external reality. So, how can we be happy? In fact, I don’t think that we can’t be happy just because we can’t change the external things. Although the external state of things cannot be changed, as long as one’s perception is changed, one can feel very different when facing the same things. For many mental illnesses, medication is often an external reality that cannot be changed, thinking, “Isn’t my life over? I’m afraid I’ll never be happy in my life.” It’s a perception that needs to be changed. If I ask you, “Are you happy eating for the rest of your life? You would be baffled. In fact, as long as the side effects of the medicine are tolerable, we can think of the medicine as a meal. We know that meals help us, and medicine helps us too! Born as a human being, who does not need to rely on something in order to live. We all need air, sunlight, and maybe a little flower. On second thought, even if you take medicine, it does not mean that life is not qualified to live a happy, tasty ah. Many times, of course, happiness needs to be facilitated by the outside world, but in retrospect, we are really happiest in life, often not because of the most affluent, or the most smooth encounter, but because we are most willing to pay for a reason in life scenarios, the most willing, even the most difficult, tired moments. So, more often than not, happiness is a mental ability that allows one to transform external circumstances into intrinsic value and pleasure. Such an ability, although there is no education or license, but the importance is not at all lost to the professional ability at work! Therefore, taking medicine requires wisdom. With wisdom, your life will be full of joy.
