The best time to treat autism

Autism is a chronic disorder that affects the social functioning of the child, and the key to its treatment is early diagnosis and early intervention. The best time to treat autism is usually before the child is 2 years old. The treatment of autism is divided into two types: educational therapy and medical therapy. Educational therapy involves teaching the child useful social skills and training, such as ways and skills to interact with others, life coping skills, ability to coordinate with the surrounding environment, training the child’s higher cognitive skills and the child’s ability to self-regulate. Pharmacotherapy is the use of some of the medications used to treat schizophrenia as a way to alleviate the anxiety, depression, and some psychiatric symptoms caused by autism. Timely intervention at the age of 2 years is generally more effective, especially for children with severe autism, but less effective once they are later than 2 years old. Therefore, children aged 1-2 years who are unable to speak, have no eye contact or body language, and exhibit stereotypic behaviors should be seen immediately by a pediatric psychiatrist.
