Autism, also known as autism, is a pervasive developmental disorder and a lifelong mental illness. For this reason, autism is also often referred to as the “mental cancer” of children. Children with autism are immersed in their own world, and everything outside seems to be irrelevant to them. The symptoms of autism can only be improved by early intervention and rehabilitation. Among other things, family education plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of autistic children. The struggle with autism is like a long march with no end in sight. Moreover, there is no shortcut to autism training, but only step-by-step efforts of autism families. “Doctor, can the child be cured?” “It depends on what you want for your child’s future.” “We know it’s hard to expect him to achieve much, but we want him to be able to at least take care of himself when he grows up.” Almost all parents of children with autism come to the Child Developmental Behavior Center at the Third Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University with this simple wish in mind. At present, the treatment of autism is still a worldwide problem, there is no special medicine, and there is no magic treatment that can make them become normal children overnight; education and training are the main treatment methods. Happily, educational training for autism has made very significant developments in the past 20 years. “With autism training, there are no shortcuts, only hard work.” Indeed, autism training is like a game of punching a level, each level requires long-term dedication, and with each breakthrough, the child’s ability goes up a step. Level 1: Starting point The child needs to be cared for by someone for the rest of his or her life. The second level: self-care Children can take care of themselves, which is the wish of most parents. But this is only the second level, the child has more potential. Level 3: Labor The child will grow up to be able to perform simple tasks. Level 4: Semi-independent The child can live, study and work independently with some protection as an adult. Level 5: Independence This is the highest level. The child grows up to be able to live, study, and work independently and make his or her own contribution to society, just like regular people. At this level, the child’s autism can be considered cured from the point of view of self-reliance and integration into society. The punchline is a success! Let’s also be clear that the higher the level, the fewer children can reach it. There is actually a lot that parents can do in this process. With autism training, the first to be trained is actually the parents.
