What you should know about syphilis

  What is syphilis?  Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by syphilis spirochete infection. It is mainly transmitted through sexual contact, and can also be transmitted from mother to child, while indirect contact is less common.  The incubation period of syphilis transmitted by sexual contact is generally 2~3 weeks, and painless hard nodular ulcers appear on the external genital area, called hard chancre, which can subside on its own. The chancre may resolve on its own. Bronze red spots may appear on the whole body 3~4 weeks after resolution, which is called stage II syphilis rash and may also resolve on its own. Stage III syphilis occurs 2 to 10 years after infection and mainly involves the skin, cardiovascular, joints, bone and central nervous system, with serious consequences.  3, Phase I and II syphilis lesions and body fluids contain syphilis spirochetes, so they are highly contagious. The third stage of syphilis is less infectious.  4, syphilis infection may not have any clinical symptoms, but highly infectious, can involve the skin, central nervous system, cardiovascular, bone and cartilage tissue, serious can be life-threatening, so it is urgent to attract the attention of patients.  How to prevent syphilis?  1, follow the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases four points:? Consciously refuse and overcome unsafe sex;? Pay strict attention to hygiene;? Public places must pay attention to adhere to the bath, adhere to the bedding sanitary ware clean;? The correct use of condoms.  2, used during the disease underwear, razors, toothbrushes, tooth cups and other toiletries, bathtubs and toilets should be boiled after use, or 75% ethanol, or hydrogen peroxide for disinfection.  3, the disease is active during the period of sexual intercourse is prohibited, the recovery period of sexual life should use condoms.  4.Pregnancy syphilis: For syphilis found during pregnancy, 1 course of treatment should be given in the early 3 months of pregnancy and 1 course of treatment in the late 3 months of pregnancy. If the syphilis is found after the early stage of pregnancy, regardless of when the syphilis infection is found during pregnancy, it should be treated immediately, and strive to carry out 2 courses of treatment with an interval of 2 weeks.  5.For the prophylactic treatment of neonatal syphilis indications:? Infants born to syphilis-infected mothers without standard treatment;? Infants born to syphilis-infected mothers treated with non-penicillin regimens during pregnancy;? Infants born to pregnant women who were treated for syphilis only within 1 month before delivery.  6. Cerebrospinal fluid examination to rule out neurosyphilis indications:? Presence of neurological or ocular symptoms;? arteritis, iritis;? Combined HIV infection;? Persistent non-specific antibodies to syphilis serology after treatment;? Recurrence of the disease.  How should syphilis be reviewed?  Syphilis is reviewed every 3 months for the first year after treatment, every 6 months for the second year, and again for the third year. After treatment for syphilis in pregnancy, review every month until delivery, and repeat the three-year review protocol for syphilis after delivery.  Cerebrospinal fluid is reviewed every six months after treatment for neurosyphilis until it turns negative. If the cerebrospinal fluid does not improve 6 months after treatment or if the cerebrospinal fluid does not completely improve in 2 years, the treatment will need to be repeated.  When is syphilis cured?  Clinical cure is defined as the healing of active damage and disappearance of symptoms after regular treatment, while cure can be determined by a negative serological non-specific antibody to syphilis and a negative cerebrospinal fluid examination index after completion of treatment.
