Bipolar disorder has long been said to be “a line between genius and insanity”. Among the mental disorders, there is indeed a disease that many people call “genius”, which is bipolar disorder. So what is bipolar disorder? It is a type of mood disorder, when the onset of mania and depression alternately, but also in a mixed manner at the same time, will directly damage the patient’s work, study, life and interaction ability. It is as if a person has two masks: excitement and depression, and uses them alternately. Where does the term “genius disorder” come from? The American psychologist Ludwig has counted 1004 leaders in the arts, science, business and other industries, many of whom have been haunted by depression and mania. Among them, writers of fictional writing are second only to poets in terms of how deeply they are affected. It is said that when he was depressed, he could not write a novel for three years, but in a manic state, he could write three novels a year. I don’t know if this is a curse or a gift, so that they can burn out the light that ordinary people can not burn out. If there is any difference between the two sides, Van Gogh and others represent bipolar disorder patients, who are extremely sensitive and at the forefront of the times: they are full of creativity and change the world with a revolutionary attitude; however, at the same time, the torment of the disease has a heavy impact on their body, mind and family: when depressed, they appear depressed, self-blaming and anxious, negative and light-hearted, while when manic, they will show impulsiveness When manic, they will show impulsive, energetic and complacent. This kind of mania and depression appear alternately or in a mixed way at the same time, all of which directly impair their work, study, life and interaction ability. The World Association of Bipolar Disorder and the International Bipolar Disorder Foundation together initiated World Bipolar Disorder Day, set with March 30 (Van Gogh’s birthday), and officially came to China in 2015. As we live in the future of these celebrities, we are fortunate to stand on the shoulders of our predecessors, which not only gives us a more enlightened perspective to explore this type of disorder, but also gives us full conviction to fight against the disease! As medical practitioners, we also hope to bring more information about bipolar disorder through our own efforts, to eliminate the social prejudice that a patient with bipolar disorder is criticized for his illness rather than evaluated for his personality, and also to eliminate the patient’s fear of bipolar disorder and establish the concept of living normally with the illness.
