Drinking paraquat can still be saved?

Paraquat is the most toxic pesticide among pyridine herbicides. It is not only for plants, but also for humans and animals. In general, the oral absorption rate of paraquat is 5%-15%, and there is no particularly effective antidote. Most of the patients cannot be saved and will die within hours or days or weeks. A few patients may survive after timely treatment, but there will be some after-effects. If a large amount of paraquat is taken orally, generally, the toxin will spread all over the body within 6-18 hours after taking it. Patients will have symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, decrease in blood oxygen, rapid heartbeat, cyanosis of mouth, lips and face, etc. Patients will die after 2-3 weeks because of respiratory failure caused by lung fibrosis. If the amount of paraquat ingested into the body is higher, the patient will generally die within 1-7 days due to gastrointestinal, liver, kidney and lung damage. If the dose of paraquat ingested by the patient is less and does not reach the lethal amount, the patient may only show symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath and chest pain, which can be survived after timely treatment, but will leave complications such as pulmonary fibrosis and the quality of survival can be seriously affected. Patients who have accidentally taken paraquat should immediately go to the hospital for vomiting, gastric lavage and other treatments to accelerate the discharge of toxins. 2 hours after poisoning is the golden period for rescue. In addition, patients need to take glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, antioxidants and other drugs to inhibit lung damage under the guidance of doctors. Patients should be reviewed regularly within six months after discharge to test lung, liver and kidney functions.
