Diffuse changes in the thyroid parenchyma refer to a goiter that presents as a diffuse involvement with a wide range of invasion. It is often detected during thyroid ultrasound. Common causes include toxic diffuse goiter (Graves’ disease), subacute thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thyroid cancer, etc. It needs to be combined with clinical manifestations, thyroid function tests, and further clarified by fine needle aspiration thyroid biopsy if necessary.

If diffuse toxic goiter is combined with significant hyperthyroidism, antihyperthyroid treatment is required. If Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is combined with hypothyroidism, thyroxine supplementation replacement therapy is required. In the case of subacute thyroiditis, NSAIDs and hormonal therapy are required. In the case of thyroid cancer, surgery is required.
