There is about a 5% chance of getting syphilis from wearing a condom, and with proper condom use, it can effectively stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. However, not all sexually transmitted diseases can be stopped by condoms because the transmission route is slightly different. For STDs that are transmitted through body fluids, mainly semen, and vaginal secretions, such as gonorrhea and AIDS, condoms are very effective in stopping the flow of these body fluids and can prevent these STDs. However, for genital herpes, human papilloma virus and syphilis, which are transmitted by skin contact, such protection measures are inferior because condoms do not completely wrap all external genitalia, skin and mucous membranes.
