Notes on Liver Pathology Consultation

Liver pathology, a subspecialty of the pathology specialty, has been developing more slowly at home and abroad. Especially, the development of diagnostic pathology level is extremely uneven in China, and liver pathology is even more so. Many pathologists in hospitals and even in large hospitals have difficulty in making appropriate and scientific pathological diagnosis of liver specimens, especially liver puncture biopsies, because they do not have much exposure to liver pathology. Therefore, there is still a great demand for liver pathology consultation from both clinicians (mainly gastroenterology and infection) and patients or families. In order to facilitate your liver pathology consultation, some relevant information needs to be carefully understood. 1.First of all, go to the hospital to borrow pathology slides: make sure to borrow all the slides from the pathology department of the hospital where the surgery or liver puncture was done, and lend immunohistochemistry, special staining or molecular pathology slides together, if available, in addition to the routine HE slides. Note that you should prepare your ID card and deposit (at least 500 RMB) before borrowing the slides, and bring a little more money, as some hospitals require several thousand dollars for the deposit. 2, the consultation should bring medical history, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of medication and other information: generally can be copied from the hospital, their own collation can also be. 3.Bring all kinds of laboratory tests, imaging, ultrasound and other examination sheets and examination reports: organize them all and bring them together with pathological slides. Especially for non-tumor liver puncture cases, laboratory tests are very important, so make sure to keep the examined laboratory sheets and don’t throw them away. The results of liver function, autoimmune antibody test, hepatitis B and other various viral tests are essential. 4. When borrowing pathology slides, it is better to borrow wax blocks at the same time: if the wax blocks are not loaned out, you can let the pathology department cut white slices (from the wax blocks). Of course, you need to pay a certain fee for cutting white slices, generally about 20 yuan for a white slice. Usually 10 white slices can be cut, or you can discuss with the consulting physician before deciding.
