As we age, there are certain diseases that inevitably make age and health “enemies”, and osteoporosis is one of them. Now, about 200 million people worldwide are suffering from osteoporosis. In China, the prevalence of osteoporosis is close to 40% among people over 60 years old, and a simple jumping movement may result in a fracture. Therefore, middle-aged and elderly people should pay close attention to their bone health. The following symptoms should be alerted to osteoporosis: Pain: This is the most common symptom of primary osteoporosis, with low back pain being the most common. Pain is felt in the lower back when starting to walk or moving the body. Initially, the back or lumbar area feels weak and painful, gradually becoming chronic pain, with occasional sudden onset of severe pain, restricted movement, and in severe cases, difficulty in turning over and sitting up. Fragility fracture: Patients often slip accidentally, lift heavy objects, jump lightly on one foot or even cough, i.e. the fracture occurs with slight external force or daily activities. Shortening of height: Never assume that all shortening of height is a normal physiological phenomenon. If you lose more than 4 cm in height compared to when you were younger, it is not normal. Spinal deformities such as hunchback may then be caused by osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Elderly people should go to the hospital to check their bone density as soon as they develop the above symptoms. For high-risk groups, regular bone density checks are needed even without any symptoms.
