What is autoimmune liver disease?

Autoimmune liver diseases are a group of autoimmune diseases that are characterized by pathological damage to the liver and abnormal liver function. It is characterized by the presence of multiple autoantibodies in the patient’s serum and significantly increased levels of gamma globulin, in addition to inflammatory pathological changes in the liver. The presence of autoantibodies indicates the presence of abnormal autoimmune regulation in the patient, the latter being the underlying cause of these diseases. Autoimmune liver diseases include autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). They are all part of the spectrum of immune-mediated diseases, but have their own characteristics. The pathogenesis of autoimmune liver disease is not yet clear and is currently thought to be mainly related to genetic susceptibility and molecular mimetic mechanisms.
