How is infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease treated?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of endovascular surgery on infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease. METHODS: We observed 49 patients (53 affected limbs) with inferior knee artery occlusive disease admitted to the Department of Vascular Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College between August 2008 and June 2010, and analyzed the symptoms, signs, ankle-brachial index (ABI), complications, and follow-up results before and after endoluminal treatment . RESULTS: Of the 53 affected limbs, the imaging technique was successful in 49 affected limbs, with a success rate of 92.5% and significant improvement in clinical symptoms; the average postoperative follow-up was 14 months (5 to 21 months), with a patency rate of 77.6%, a limb preservation rate of 91.8%, and a survival rate of 95.9% at 1 year after surgery. Conclusion: The endovascular technique can safely and effectively treat infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease and improve the limb preservation rate, and should be the preferred method for hemodynamic reconstruction in this disease
