Don’t use He Shou Wu indiscriminately

  He Shou Wu is widely used in medicine and health care, causing liver damage in some people. Recently, the State Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) issued the latest adverse reaction notification, suggesting that He Shou Wu has the risk of causing liver damage. The daily dosage of raw He Shou Wu in all health foods should not exceed 1.5g, and the daily dosage of made He Shou Wu should not exceed 3.0g, and long-term overdose is more likely to cause liver damage. According to the regulations, the production of health food containing He Shou Wu after September 1, the labeling of the unsuitable population to add “liver insufficiency, family history of liver disease”, the precautions to add “this product contains He Shou Wu, should not be long-term overdose, avoid simultaneous use with hepatotoxic drugs, pay attention to monitor liver function “.  As early as 2006, the UK’s Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency was the first to issue information on adverse drug reactions, advising patients with a history of liver disease to take He Shou Wu preparations under medical supervision. 2013, China’s General Administration of Food and Drug transferred five over-the-counter varieties of He Shou Wu-containing medicines, such as Blood and Hair Capsules, Shou Wu Pills, Shou Wu Tablets, Shou Wu Yanshou Tablets and Shou Wu Yanshou Granules, to prescription medicine management, as well as the requirement to increase the liver damage warning. The chemicals contained in raw Radix Polygoni are more damaging to the human liver. The system of He Shou Wu is raw Shou Wu mixed with black bean juice and steamed, nine steams and nine sunsets, after the concoction of raw Shou Wu in the anthraquinones in a significant decline in hepatotoxicity, may be related to this. The medicine is three parts poisonous, eating excessive amounts of raw radix or long-term large amounts of the system of heshou because of individual differences may cause liver damage.  If the skin, sclera yellow stain, yellow urine, anorexia, loss of appetite, general malaise and other symptoms occur during the drug, it is recommended to promptly check liver function and other indicators, if elevated, suggesting that drug-related liver injury may have occurred. If elevated, it indicates that drug-related liver injury may have occurred. The patient should immediately go to the hospital for treatment.
