Depressed mood is not depression

Data show that the world’s average of every 40 seconds a suicide, and 1/4 of the suicide population due to depression. A while ago, Hollywood movie star Robin Williams and translator Sun Zhongxu committed suicide due to depression. Williams, translator Sun Zhongxu both committed suicide due to depression, suicide prevention first to prevent depression, but the current social prevention and treatment interventions for depression is still inadequate.
The last epidemiological survey of mental illness in Shenzhen was completed in 2005, and the data at that time showed that the lifetime prevalence of depression among Shenzhen residents over 18 years old was 7.74%, which was slightly higher than the level in other regions of China; however, only 9.76% of these depressed patients went to hospitals for regular treatment.
Depression is a disease, yet there are many misconceptions about it in society. For example, some people mistake occasional depressive moods for depression, others are afraid to face up to and seek treatment due to shame, and useless efforts are made in treating depressed patients due to a lack of understanding of their thinking and cognitive patterns.
  1. Medication and psychotherapy are the most effective treatment strategies
In 2014, there was a survey in Beijing Valium Hospital that showed that the incidence of depression is still quite high, but there is a confusion that patients are not willing to go to treatment centers for depression and just go to general hospitals, which do not get effective treatment. In our interviews, we found that some depressed patients also do not know what channels are available for treatment. Many people suffer from depression, but will not seek effective ways to solve the problem, he may go through some inefficient or ineffective measures, such as doing activities inside the home or taking a temporary leave for a period of time. According to our original research, the percentage of people who actually seek professional treatment is very low, less than 10%, and 90% of patients may choose ineffective ways, such as recuperation, food therapy, etc. Of course, some of them may be effective, but it is not the main effective way for the disease.
Nowadays, there are several different ways to treat the disease. From a scientific point of view, the most straightforward, the most economical and the most effective is drug therapy, but drugs cannot solve all the problems. From a variety of hypotheses and research, depression has a basis in medical susceptibility, whether it is genetics or growing up with personality defects, which may cause depression more easily than others. For example, people have a depression value, others have a high depression value and are not prone to out-of-control behavior when there is stress or frustration; people with susceptible qualities may experience a decline in mood at the slightest problem, even an uncontrollable decline. Currently medication is the most direct and effective, but in the long run, medication and psychotherapy are the internationally accepted means, including the guidelines of the American Psychological Association Psychiatric Association, which also believe that the most effective strategy is currently medication and psychotherapy.
Depression should be the result of a combination of factors, a collection of psychological and physical symptoms manifesting mental illness, I think mental health education must be solidly promoted in school education to improve the ability of individuals to self-intervene in psychological crises and emergency situations. If there is a psychological discomfort that cannot be overcome by oneself and one’s family and friends, one can seek consultation with professional social workers and doctors at Hong Ning Hospital. If one does have problems in this area, one should cooperate with professional treatment, and family members should give understanding and support in all aspects.
Nowadays, too many people do not understand depression and have misunderstandings about it, thus adopting incorrect coping attitudes towards people with depression around them, even if they are well-intentioned, but to some extent they aggravate each other’s distress instead.
Many people who know they have depression are afraid to face it, and are even more afraid to go into the hospital, but in fact depression is an ordinary disease, 11% of people have different degrees of depression symptoms, nothing to be ashamed of. “Talking” will relieve the mental pressure of depressed people, and let everyone know that depression is a disease, do not have any prejudice against it.
2.Status quo: the peak of the disease is around 20 years old, and psychological trauma is a susceptible factor
In 2005, Shenzhen Kangning Hospital, in conjunction with the Public Security Bureau, conducted a survey, and the figure of depression at that time was 7.8%, that is, the proportion of adults over 18 years old who suffered from depression was 7.8%. In fact, after 2005, due to various reasons, this data is now particularly looking forward to be updated. We don’t have the updated figure yet, but looking at the data from other cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and other regions, this figure should have been surpassed by now.
There are actually a very large number of people suffering from depression. Among the outpatient clinics, maybe 6 out of 10 people suffer from depression, which of course is an individual case. These people will try to portray themselves in front of others, make a lot of efforts and may be more normal than normal, but they will have problems with their emotional level. Especially nowadays, young white-collar workers, in the stage of career advancement or struggle, are especially prone to attack if they are under particularly high pressure.
There are many medical hypotheses about susceptibility factors, such as those who have suffered some trauma in their early years or had a bad upbringing, or those who have suffered some setbacks or traumas, or some special people who are prone to stress, such as those who have a strong sense of responsibility and morality, and those who have high demands on themselves and pursue perfection. Such people are prone to a variety of mental illnesses, and depression is more frequent.
There are also genetic factors, in addition to psychologists after years of research, found that particularly intelligent people are also susceptible people. Why? Because these people are sensitive nerves, very sensitive to knowledge.
3, misunderstanding: network diagnosis is not rigorous, depression and personality are not necessarily related
Depression is not the same as depression. There is a data in the United States, 70% of the general population has ever had depression in their lives, most of us must have a period of low mood or bad mood in our lives, but not necessarily to depression. Depression is only considered a disease once it meets the medical criteria for diagnosis. Once it is a disease, it must be beyond subjective control and has affected normal life. But depressed mood, may be adjusted by a change of environment and a temporary break for a while.
Depressive state may have everyone, according to the disease diagnosis to consider the duration, the severity, generally depression is a continuous two-week period, most of the time every day in a depressed state.
Nowadays, the diagnosis of depression is relatively strict and requires a comprehensive assessment by professional workers and professional doctors before a conclusion can be made, and some scales can only be used for reference. For example, if depression is found after an online self-test, this may have many sources, such as a reaction to mourning, a psychological reaction to a loss of love or a frustrated psychological state, all of which may appear depressed. But whether this constitutes depression, this is something that requires professional assessment to determine.
There are also people in life who are particularly optimistic and strong, but who unexpectedly suffer from depression and even go to suicide. Many people may look at depression and think that it is only in people who are sullen and unhappy, but it is not. How should we perceive this disease? From the current research and a large amount of psychological knowledge and experience, depression and personality are not necessarily related, perhaps many career-oriented, perfectionist people are more likely to suffer from it, and more related to people who are prone to stress. For example, why is the incidence high in Shenzhen? Because Shenzhen is a city of immigrants, most people want to improve their lives and develop their careers better.
Often the happy fruit is the cause of depression, because he can’t vent the negative things, so he uses “happy” to cover up. Hidden depression means that he is usually outgoing, but he may be depressed because of certain events and factors, but his previous image of himself is that he is open-minded, so he tries to show that aspect. There is also bidirectional disorder, where he may have been overly excited and particularly happy before, but then turned depressed and people didn’t notice.
The thinking and cognition of depressed patients are a little different from others, they are more likely to focus on some negative things, and they are more likely to get stuck in the knot of thinking when they think about the problem, when they evaluate themselves. For example, when they see a colleague’s promotion, they will be very sad, they will be particularly inferior, this is not a problem in thinking, the way he thinks about the problem determines that he is prone to such thoughts, and such thoughts will easily cause his emotions, but he can not say that he wants to change.
Others talked about shame, saying that many people know they or their family members have depression, but are reluctant to seek medical advice, feeling that suffering from depression will be looked at differently by many people, and that others do not treat it as a common illness, but as a mental problem.
