Depression Cure Series No. 3: Light of Hope

This is a story about a certain young man who confided his heart to his grandfather. This young man told his grandfather about his despair. He had nothing, no job skills, and the girl he loved had abandoned him. Half of the people he had grown up with had committed suicide. The remaining half, for the most part, lived in the dark, numbing themselves with alcohol. He himself often went out and drank. What’s the point of living like this? Grandpa listened quietly for a long time. Finally, he said: “Your despair is a wolf, a very powerful wolf. This wolf can kill you and devour your soul. But hope is also a wolf, just as strong, and it will fight despair for you.” Then he paused for a moment. (Old people often do that. They don’t conclude the story with some philosophy of life like Aesop’s fables, they want you to realize something for yourself.) But the young man suddenly cried out: “Grandpa, please tell me. I need to know which wolf will be the ultimate victor!” The grandfather answered him, “The one you have been feeding.”
