Multiple cysts of the liver are not likely to heal on their own. The most common type of multiple cysts in the liver are congenital cysts, which are mainly caused by abnormal development of the bile ducts during embryonic life. Others include neoplastic liver cysts and parasitic liver cysts. Congenital liver cysts do not require clinical treatment if they are small in diameter and have no clinical symptoms. Tumorigenic liver cysts and parasitic liver cysts require appropriate treatment to achieve a cure. Of course, there are some types of tumorigenic liver cysts, such as hepatic cystadenoma that may not be surgically treatable and require chemotherapy or radiation therapy to relieve symptoms. There is a relatively rare type of polycystic liver caused by chromosomal abnormalities. This type of cyst is very numerous, diffuse and densely distributed in the liver, and can lead to cirrhosis, portal hypertension and even liver failure, and patients in advanced stages may eventually require liver transplantation to save their lives.
