What does multiple small cysts in the liver mean?

Small multiple cysts in the liver refer to a benign lesion of the liver. They are usually combined with cysts in other organs, such as polycystic kidneys, and are usually congenitally present. Most of them can exist individually or in multiple states, the borders of the cysts are relatively clear and the fluid stored within them is not easily detected, patients usually find them by chance during physical examination, this phenomenon can exist in all lobes of the liver or can be confined to the tubules within the liver and bile. The composition of the fluid within the cyst varies according to the type, size and presence of complications of the cyst. In polycystic liver the cystic fluid is usually clear, while if intracapsular hemorrhage is present, the cystic fluid appears red. If there is a complication of infection the cyst fluid can be purulent. In terms of treatment if the cysts are relatively small and the patient has no other clinical discomfort, regular follow-up can be performed and followed up. If the cyst is relatively large and the patient has symptoms of compression or is considered to have the possibility of infection or rupture, which affects the patient’s daily life and work, hepatic cysts can be treated by opening and debulking drainage or resection, or sclerotherapy with anhydrous alcohol injection. However, the long-term effect of surgery is much better than sclerotherapy, and the recurrence rate is lower.
