What is the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank? How do I apply for a bone marrow match with the bone marrow bank?

The China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) is a database of blood stem cell donors in China.

The Chinese Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) was established in 1992 with the approval of the Ministry of Health.

In 2001, with the support of the government, the Chinese Red Cross restarted work on building the database. In December of the same year, the Central Editorial Office approved the establishment of the China Blood Stem Cell Donor Database Management Center to unify management and standardize the promotion, organization, and mobilization of volunteer donors, HLA (leukocyte antigen) typing, retrieval of matched donors for patients, and transplant-related services.

The Chinese Bone Marrow Bank collaborates with 23 HLA tissue matching laboratories, 6 HLA high-resolution typing confirmation laboratories, 1 HLA quality control laboratory, 7 cord blood banks (public cord blood banks) and more than 130 transplant/collection hospitals to provide services for patients with blood disorders and other conditions, in collaboration with expert committees and 31 provincial (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) branch banks and local and municipal workstations.

Since 2003, the construction of the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank has been supported by the National Lottery Public Welfare Fund. By the end of 2017, the total capacity of the bank exceeded 2.42 million; the total number of blood stem cells provided for clinical use exceeded 7,000 cases, of which more than 280 were donated to overseas; and more than 960,000 data were uploaded to the World Bone Marrow Bank.

People between the ages of 18 and 45 who are in good health, meet the requirements for blood donation, have a history of blood donation, and have family consent can apply to join the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank. You can apply for membership at the same time as you donate blood at a blood donation site.

What procedures are required for physicians to help patients contact the main and branch banks to search for HLA compatible donors?

Patients need to report detailed HLA typing information and a brief description of their condition with accurate contact information, including who to contact, phone number, and address, so that the search results can be reported to physicians and patients as soon as possible.

If an initial search finds an HLA-matched donor, what are the next steps?

If a donor with an HLA match is found on the initial search, what happens next?

If the transplant physician deems the donor suitable and reports to the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank that a donor is needed, we will ask the physician to take a patient blood sample, along with the donor blood sample, for HLA  typing retest and high score workup, and after further confirmation of match, we will discuss with the transplant physician the specifics of donor HSC collection and patient transplantation.

What is the next step if the initial search does not find a suitable donor?

If a patient does not find a suitable donor in the initial search, the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank will keep the patient’s information for one year and conduct periodic retrievals for the patient, and as the bank capacity continues to expand, hopefully the patient will find a suitable HSC donor soon.

Can a donor and a patient receiving a blood stem cell transplant meet directly?

.

In accordance with international practice, for many medical, psychological and social reasons, donors and patients generally do not come into contact, and if communication is needed, it must be done with the consent and arrangement of the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank.

Can patients in the Chinese population find HLA-compatible HSC donors from non-yellow populations, such as white and black populations?

Can we find HLA-compatible HSC donors from non-yellow and black populations?

Because of ethnic genetic differences, the HLA type of Chinese people differs significantly from white and black populations, for example, and the best hope for Chinese patients to find HLA-compatible donors is in the Chinese population and more difficult in other ethnic groups.

Can Chinese living around the world turn to the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank if they become ill and need a blood stem cell transplant?

Of course.

Of course, the HLA match rate depends on race, ethnicity and region, and the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank serves patients worldwide, so when Chinese and other patients around the world need HSCT, they can turn to the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank to get the maximum number of HLA-matched HSCT donors possible.
