There is no definite conclusion whether gout can be cured or not. Some patients, after systematic and standardized treatment, can be free of acute gout attacks for a long time without medication, and the blood uric acid is at a low level, so it can be considered that gout has been “cured”, but such patients only have a better control of the disease, and gout is still not really “cured”. However, this type of patients only have a better control of their disease, but gout is not really “cured”. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of gout are well researched, and the efficacy of therapeutic drugs is clear, which can effectively control the development of the disease. Many gout patients are in their middle age, with good physical function, strong metabolism and able to do proper physical exercise. Although they suffer from gout, they can improve their ability to excrete uric acid as long as they adhere to a low purine diet and do proper physical exercise. Thus, after systematic and standardized treatment, they can be free of acute gout attacks for a long time with less or even no medication, and keep their blood uric acid at a low level. For such patients, a low purine diet and exercise are their powerful weapons to control gout, and gout seems to be “cured”. However, for elderly patients, the body’s ability to excrete uric acid physiologically decreases, coupled with the easy combination of hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, kidney disease and other chronic diseases, often need to take a variety of drugs, in the treatment of gout is often limited, although they can adhere to a low purine diet and appropriate physical exercise, but still need to take long-term oral medication to control gout condition. For older patients, there is no “cure” for gout. Therefore, there is no definitive answer as to whether gout can be cured. However, for both young and old gout patients, systematic and standardized treatment is the key to control the disease, while adhering to a low purine diet and appropriate exercise so that the gout does not flare up again can be considered a cure.
