Misconceptions about osteoporosis (I)

With the aging of the population, the number of elderly patients with osteoporosis is increasing and the rate of orthopedic admissions for fragility fractures due to osteoporosis is also significantly higher. Many people are familiar with the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes, but when it comes to osteoporosis, they are a bit confused. There are two reasons for this: first, the increase in life expectancy. When older fractures such as hip fractures and spinal fractures occur, patients naturally begin to take osteoporosis seriously. The second reason is the improvement of medical environment. With the continuous progress of medical conditions, various methods of treating osteoporosis have emerged one after another, which also provide doctors with a powerful weapon in treating osteoporosis and can make patients aware of osteoporosis so that they can treat it. In the past, our knowledge about osteoporosis was still relatively scarce. At present, elderly patients’ knowledge about osteoporosis can be divided into two categories: First, osteoporosis is an inevitable phenomenon when people get old, so they should not bother about it; second, osteoporosis is really a problem, which can lead to fracture and is very troublesome, and still needs to be treated. However, it is not clear how to prevent and treat it. Therefore, many elderly patients have gone into misconceptions in understanding osteoporosis. I remember a few years ago, a young man walked in with his elderly mother and said he wanted to see me about osteoporosis. The young man was very polite to me, but made a request when it came time to accept the treatment plan. He said, “We only use xxx calcium tablets ……”! ! First of all, I am very affirmative of the young man’s filial piety, but I am afraid that if he follows his request, it will be very difficult for him to help his mother to solve her osteoporosis problem. Because the treatment of osteoporosis requires the synergistic effect of multiple drugs, not a single drug can solve. This little story that happened to me makes me feel that the scientific popularization of osteoporosis is very important. It is the unshirkable responsibility of our doctors to let the majority of patients out of the misunderstanding!
