Combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment of chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis

More than 20 years ago, mankind has not yet found an effective treatment plan to deal with this disease, so the efficacy is poor, and patients with cirrhotic ascites with big bellies are often seen in the clinic. I have personally heard patients begging our doctors from the bottom of their hearts, “Whoever can cure my disease, I will send him a color TV.” At that time, color TVs were in demand and expensive appliances, and people needed to save up for months or years before they could afford to buy them, so it was clear that the patients were eager to seek medical treatment and the doctors were helpless at that time. Today, Western and Chinese doctors at home and abroad have developed medicine through relentless research and have made progress in treating chronic hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis with their own characteristics. For example, Western medicine has created anti-hepatitis B virus drugs, effective diuretics, highly effective antibiotics, sophisticated liver transplantation techniques, and so on. Chinese medicine, on the other hand, has invented herbal preparations for the effective treatment of liver fibrosis, and has made significant achievements in liver protection and anti-inflammation to improve immunity. It should be noted that the above mentioned drugs and techniques, when applied singly, may only be effective in one area. If Western medicine and Chinese medicine work together, the combination of Chinese and Western medicine may control the progress of the disease from multiple perspectives and achieve more desirable results, although it cannot cure the disease, but can slow down, stall or even reverse the process of the disease. Western medicine focuses on etiological treatment. The cause of chronic hepatitis B is the hepatitis B virus that the patient is infected with. If the hepatitis B virus can be removed from the body, the “enemy” is eliminated, the “war” will stop, the liver no longer has inflammation, the body may slowly repair itself, and can reach the ideal state of disease healing. In the last 10 years or so, a variety of anti-hepatitis B virus western drugs have been introduced one after another. Strictly grasp the indications antiviral treatment has brought the gospel for the majority of chronic hepatitis B,. Hepatitis B virus is no longer detected in many patients, and liver inflammation has been greatly reduced. However, by the current limitations of technology, the virus is not detected does not mean that the virus is completely removed, in fact, the current antiviral drugs, especially oral drugs on the poor ability to remove the virus, more can only do to suppress the virus, so some patients liver inflammation has not ceased. If you stop taking antivirals, the virus will replicate again and hepatitis will “resurface”. This is why doctors want patients to take antivirals for a long time. However, long-term medication can create problems with viral resistance, so doctors and patients need to choose their medications carefully at the time of initial treatment. However, some patients with chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis who receive antiviral therapy still have not returned to normal liver function, such as high transaminases and bilirubin, further low albumin, and an enlarged spleen, despite the fact that the virus is no longer detectable or very low. What to do? This is the time to find a Chinese medicine practitioner and combine Chinese and Western medicine together to treat. “Although Chinese medicine has no cure for hepatitis B virus, Chinese medicine can suppress liver inflammation and lower transaminases and bilirubin through evidence-based treatment, which can improve the body’s immunity. In particular, there are several state-approved anti-liver fibrosis herbal preparations in China that can effectively treat liver fibrosis. To use an analogy, the hepatitis B virus is like a polluter that destroys the environment; Chinese medicine is good at removing pollution, while antiviral drugs can subdue the polluter. If you control the pollutants but not the pollutants, the environment will still be bad; if you only remove the pollutants but not the pollutants, the pollutants will still be produced and the efforts to remove the pollutants will be greatly reduced. Anti-viral western medicine can inhibit hepatitis B virus and reduce liver inflammation, but not directly eliminate liver inflammation and anti-liver fibrosis; Chinese medicine can reduce or eliminate the patient’s symptoms, reduce liver inflammation by clearing heat and detoxifying, adjust immune function by supporting the righteousness, reduce the degree of liver fibrosis and improve liver microcirculation by activating blood stasis. Anti-viral western medicine components dissolved in blood can act with improved liver microcirculation and more contact with liver cells, improving anti-viral efficacy; anti-hepatitis B virus means removing or reducing factors of inflammation and liver fibrosis, helping to eliminate inflammation and anti-liver fibrosis. Therefore, the combination of both Chinese and Western medicine, complementing each other, is much more effective than the use of Western medicine alone or Chinese herbal medicine alone. In fact, many patients with chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis treated in our department are now taking only antiviral western medicine and anti-liver fibrosis herbal medicine, and their condition is stable without any discomfort, with no abnormalities in laboratory tests and ultrasound review every 3 months. As a result, they feel as normal, feel relaxed, have improved quality of life and have a much greater expectation of life.
