Home care for diarrhea and vomiting

Diarrhea – refers to loose or watery stools and often increases in frequency. The most common cause of diarrheal disease is a viral infection, and bacterial infections are also common in pediatric patients. Parents should pay attention to the daily hygiene of their children. Fecal-oral transmission is the predominant route of infection. Once diarrheal disease occurs, diarrhea may persist for up to 10 days, even with proper treatment. Vomiting – often due to viral infection of the GI tract or food irritation of the GI tract, most vomiting stops within 8-12 hours if treated properly. If vomiting does not stop, immediate medical attention is needed to rule out other acute causes. Recurrent episodes of vomiting that occur for more than 12 hours often require more immediate attention than diarrhea.
