Seeing a psychiatrist first eliminates worries about visiting

What would you think if you went to a general hospital for internal medicine and surgery, or obstetrics and gynecology, or ophthalmology, and the doctor listened to you, arranged the necessary tests, and then recommended that you go to a psychiatry department? Maybe you will be angry, “This doctor is so irresponsible, I am not mentally ill”; maybe you will be full of doubts, “The doctor is so bad, he can’t see the physical problems, so he said my brain is sick”; or maybe you will be worried “Will I be depressed? Will I commit suicide? Will I go crazy?” Many of these patients have been seen repeatedly in multiple departments at multiple hospitals and come to the psychology clinic with the attitude of giving it a last try, but are full of questions and reluctance. Many other patients continue to change hospitals, departments and doctors …… Eventually, the problem is solved in the psychology department. At least half of the patients who visit psychology departments in general hospitals have these tortuous experiences. When you come to the psychology department, the doctor will tell you three things: First, it is clear that you do not have a serious organic disease, but may only be a functional disorder, that is, “plant nerve dysfunction” or “neurosis”. For example, heartburn and chest tightness suspected of coronary artery disease, but the ECG and even coronary angiography are normal, probably due to sympathetic hyperexcitation. For example, stomach pain and bloating is unbearable, but the gastroscopy shows only superficial gastritis, the severity of symptoms far exceeds the actual lesion, it may be a gastrointestinal dysfunction. Secondly, you are not “making”, not pretending to be sick, and not “looking for a sickness”. Your pain and discomfort are real, and we will not only understand your pain, but also tell your family to acknowledge and understand your pain. In the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, there is a saying that “the seven emotions cause illness”. The body and mind are one, and “happiness, anger, sadness, thought, grief, fear and fright” can all lead to dysfunction of the body. The modern medical term for anxiety and depression disorders has many physical symptoms in addition to emotional symptoms. Finally, to tell you the good news, your pain can be reduced or even eliminated. The vast majority of patients with anxiety and depression disorders can have their symptoms alleviated or even recovered after standardized treatment. However, psychological treatment is not just a “chat and talk”, for patients with severe symptoms, medication is necessary. For patients with milder conditions, psychotherapy is an option, but it must be planned and implemented by a psychologist who has received systematic professional training.
