What is the etiology of erythema multiforme-like rash?

Erythema multiforme is an acute inflammatory skin disorder with a polymorphic rash that may be accompanied by mucosal damage. In severe cases, there is severe mucosal and visceral damage. The lesions are polymorphic, occurring in spring and autumn, and are more common in young women. The disease is similar to the “goose sores” and “cat’s eye sores” described in Chinese medical literature. For example, in the “Treatise on the Origin of Diseases”, it is stated that “geese sores are born on the body, like wet lichenous ulcers, mostly on the limbs and all over the body, and their sores are large and hot and painful. This sore is often found in the spring, autumn, February and August when the geese come to the hair, and when the geese go to the disease, so it is named.” Another example is the “Medical Zong Jinjian – Surgical Methods” cat’s eye sore: “Initially shaped like a cat’s eye, the luster shines without pus or blood, but the pain and itching is not constant, and for a long time it is near the shin.” The late Mr. Zhao Bingnan, a famous dermatologist, called this disease “blood wind sores”. According to Chinese medicine, this disease is mostly caused by blood-heat or internal dampness, and then by wind-heat or wind-cold evil, resulting in disharmony between Ying and Wei, and stagnation of Qi and blood, which can be induced in the skin or by dietary disorder or contraindication.
