What’s wrong with the jumping eyelids?

”The left eye jumps for money, the right eye jumps for disaster”, in everyone’s opinion just a jumping of the eyelid, usually does not cause people to pay attention to, but after a period of time there may form a disease – “facial muscle spasm “. You may have seen some people on the street with distorted faces and necks, even making “eyebrow squeezing” movements, these performances may be “facial myoclonus”. Facial myoclonus, also known as facial muscle twitching or lateral facioscapulohumeral spasm. It is a condition of involuntary twitching of the half side of the face, with paroxysmal and irregular twitches of varying degrees, which can be aggravated by fatigue, mental tension and voluntary movements. The disease occurs mostly after middle age and is commonly seen in women. The onset of the disease begins with the orbicularis oculi muscle and then involves the entire face. The muscles of the lower eyelids twitch, and the disease progresses to the corners of the mouth, and in severe cases, the neck and face are disfigured by contracture and deformation, which seriously affects life and work, and even psychological health. Facial muscle spasm is caused by the presence of abnormal blood vessels in the brainstem area of the facial nerve, most of which are arteries, causing compression of the facial nerve. The arterial vascular pulsation stimulates the nerves, thus showing involuntary twitching of the facial muscles. In order to clarify the specific cause of facial muscle spasm, patients need to perform a special MRI sequence – 3D TOF examination. 3D-TOF magnetic resonance angiography can show the abnormalities of the blood vessels surrounding the facial nerve more clearly, allowing us to understand the compression of the facial nerve and thus clarify the relationship between the specific responsible vessels and the facial nerve root. Internal treatment of facial muscle spasm includes oral medications or local botulinum toxin injections, etc. However, these treatments may be ineffective or temporarily effective, and are highly prone to recurrence after the end of treatment. At present, according to the consensus of domestic and foreign experts, the preferred treatment for facial myospasm is microvascular decompression of facial nerve roots (MVD), which is the most effective and the only treatment with a possible cure. The surgery can clarify the specific responsible vessel, apply the artificial material Teflon pad cotton, pad between the responsible vessel and brainstem, keep the responsible vessel away from the facial nerve root, so as to eliminate its stimulation to the nerve and achieve the surgical purpose of stopping facial twitching.
