Treatment of pediatric viral diarrheal disease

Winter is a high season for pediatric diarrheal disease, which is mostly caused by viral infections, such as rotavirus and norovirus. The symptoms are mainly dilute watery stools. Parents are very anxious to see their children get sick. Hold the child every day to run to the hospital, queue registration to wait a long time, some parents out of the psychological uneasiness also ran a number of hospitals. In fact, this is completely unnecessary. I have summarized here a few issues that parents should know about the treatment process of pediatric diarrhea disease for reference. First question: How to use oral rehydration salts? Because diarrhea in autumn and winter is almost always caused by viral infections, there are no special medications available for viruses and there is no need to use them, as long as they are properly cared for, they will generally recover on their own. However, dehydration due to severe vomiting and diarrhea can affect the child’s health. Therefore, in order to prevent dehydration, doctors often prescribe a drug called oral rehydration salts, also called ORS. Some doctors ask for 500ml of water, some ask for 750ml of water, which one is reasonable? There are three kinds of oral rehydration salts, namely I, II and III, and the first two are generally used in hospitals. The difference between them is that the tension is different, the first two are 2/3 sheets, can not understand the ‘tension’ is it, to put it bluntly is the amount of potassium and sodium contained in it. Do not understand this is okay. Listen to understand the doctor’s instructions will be good. Generally speaking, our doctors divide dehydration into stages of treatment. Commonly speaking, the first day of oral rehydration salt a packet of warm water to 500ml. and to the second day, then rehydration salt to a packet of water to 700ml, as the condition improves, the third day can even be a packet of water to 1000ml. 3 sheets. The amount of the first day should be finished within 4 hours, about 50-100ml/kg, a 10kg child should have at least 500ml. The second day can be used according to the number of times of diarrhea, 10ml/kg can be given after a thin water stool. To prevent the child from vomiting, a small amount must be given frequently. Second question: Why do children with diarrhea need to take zinc preparations? Some parents do not understand why a child with diarrhea needs to take zinc. It is because the virus will destroy the intestinal mucosa of the child after invasion. Medical research has found that zinc can reduce the damage of intestinal mucosa cells, inhibit bacterial reproduction, stabilize intestinal osmotic pressure and intestinal mucosal enzyme function, and strengthen local intestinal immunity. It is not easy to understand, but in fact, it is enough to know that zinc protects the intestinal tract and can reduce the number of days of diarrhea. Zinc supplementation can shorten the duration of diarrhea, reduce the disease and prevent recurrence of diarrhea in the next 2-3 months. Supplementation is usually needed for about 1 week. Third question: What should I pay attention to in the diet of a child with pediatric diarrhea? Diarrhea in autumn and winter is common in small infants and is characterized by egg-flake soup-like thin watery stools, some of which are sprayed like an open tap. The duration of the disease is usually 5-7 days, but clinically there are often more than 10 days without healing. What is the cause? It is because the virus has caused the loss of lactase in the intestinal mucosa, resulting in poor absorption of lactose, which is often referred to by doctors as lactose intolerance, and this is the reason why diarrhea is not good for a long time. At this time, mothers remember the doctor mentioned a doctor’s visit called ‘lactose-free formula’? It is here to help your child. Be sure to use it. The lactose-free milk powder feeding for children with diarrhea will shorten the course of the disease and facilitate recovery, especially for infants and toddlers within 1 year of age, with the direct stop of the original milk powder, generally needing 5-7 days to change back, change back to the lactose-free milk powder to gradually change back. Pediatric diarrhea disease in the fall and winter is self-healing, and parents will return to normal in 3-5 days as long as they take good care of it. The main purpose of treatment is to prevent and correct dehydration, so the use of oral rehydration salts is important and should be done properly; proper care will lead to an early recovery, so the use of oral zinc preparations and lactose-free milk powder should be used for about 1 week. Once you know this, is it possible to not worry about your child’s diarrhea.
