It was my first time to go to Ningxia. I sat on the flight from Beijing to Yinchuan and wondered what it would be like. My mind flashed with the movie “Red Gaoliang” a scene, so I thought about it. Loess slopes, desert wasteland, autumn wind, sand and dust; and the Yellow River, either broken, or flooding; hard-working crops, facing the loess back to the sky, the harvest is difficult to secure really helpless. After an hour of flight, the plane landed at Yinchuan Hedong Airport. Friends stood at the exit and greeted us with a spring breeze. Then we drove more than one hundred and sixty kilometers straight to Zhongning County. The car sped along the international standard highway, and when we looked out of the car window, we saw a flat river and a vast expanse. Golden rice, heavy sorghum, farmers are busy harvesting in the field, a bountiful scene; high autumn, blue sky, white clouds, the glow of the sunset reflecting ten thousand hectares of fields, the picture in front of me amazed, could not help but say to a friend sitting next to me, this scene and my imagination of Ningxia is a world away! He was not without emotion and I spoke eloquently. He said, “the world’s Yellow River rich Ningxia”, the mother river to Ningxia special love, in this piece of land quietly flowing, less flooding. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, working people living here to build ditches, crisscrossing, forming a network of water, irrigation; after liberation, to strengthen the construction of water conservancy, water diversion projects more perfect, the Yellow River water nourished millions of Ningxia sons and daughters on both sides, nourishing tens of thousands of square kilometers of the two major plains of Yinchuan and Weining. It has become a veritable land of fish and rice, or an important commodity grain base in the northwest of China, with the reputation of “South of the Seas”. The rice produced, commonly known as Xixia tribute rice, is one of the four tribute rice of Chinese dynasties; apples are not too big, green and red color, crisp and sweet taste, less moisture, not easy to rot, easy to transport and storage; and Wuzhong beef and mutton, the Yellow River carp, that is pure natural organic food, famous in China and abroad. As you know, Chinese wolfberry is nature’s gift to mankind’s treasures, both as a valuable Chinese herbal medicine and as a superior tonic. The whole body of Chinese wolfberry is a treasure, fruit, stalk, leaves and roots contain protein, vitamins, amino acids and minerals required by the human body, with certain health and medicinal functions. Song dynasty Su Dongpo wrote “small garden wolfberry” said well, “root and flower solid, clean up nothing left”. The efficacy of Chinese wolfberry has been recorded in the materia medica. The materia medica HuiYin said, “wolfberry can make the gas can be filled, blood can be tonic, Yang can be born, Yin can be long, rheumatism can go, there are ten full of the beauty of it”. Ming Dynasty pharmacist Li Shizhen’s “Compendium of Materia Medica” pointed out that Chinese wolfberry “can nourish the kidneys, moisten the lungs, sperm, and benefit the qi, this is a flat tonic medicine”. In short, Chinese wolfberry can nourish Yin, but also can benefit Yang. Modern research proves that Chinese wolfberry has the efficacy of lowering blood sugar, lowering blood pressure, regulating blood lipids; and can delay aging, anti-fatigue, tumor suppression, improve human immunity, promote gonadal function and other pharmacological effects. Experimental research results tell people that wolfberry can significantly extend the average life span of fruit flies and mice. It goes without saying that Chinese wolfberry can promote health, prolong life, prevent and control certain diseases and other effects with modern scientific basis. Wu Yuxi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, wrote a famous line about wolfberry, “The top function of the sweet dew taste, also know a spoonful can prolong the age”. This for the evaluation of the wolfberry can be said to be appropriate. Ningxia’s wolfberry is famous in China and abroad, and the real hometown of wolfberry is Zhongning. China has three wolfberry main production areas, produced in Gansu Zhangye County (ancient name Ganzhou), known as Gan wolfberry; produced in Tianjin and Hebei, named Jin wolfberry; Ningxia Zhongning County produced, known as the western wolfberry, at home and abroad reputation. Because the grain is big, the flesh is thick, the quality is soft and moist, the color is bright red, the taste is sweet, it has the reputation of “king of wolfberry”. Taste, moist and sweet. To be honest, the quality of the wolfberry here than I have seen in the past are better, known as the “king of wolfberry”, the name is true. I curiously asked a friend around me, why the wolfberry grows so well in Zhongning? He said, the Yellow River water, land fertilization, latitude good, climate suitable, which is the wolfberry growth is unique natural conditions. We passed along the road on both sides, and the size of the scattered farmers wolfberry garden, most of the farmhouse in front of the house, drying wolfberry dried fruit several large plate. My curiosity is trying to find out the answer to what makes him a king. I admire his courage and ability, with his hard work and wisdom, created a huge social wealth, providing numerous employment opportunities; admire him, the wealth of the large, decades as one day, can maintain a diligent and frugal rustic, not arrogant style. Ningxia’s wolfberry haunts me, and its natural scenery, history and culture also make people linger. Riding a camel in Shapotou to experience the fun of the desert camel caravan; rafting on the Yellow River in a sheepskin raft, with its thrill and danger, is particularly enjoyable. Not far from downtown Yinchuan there is a sand lake, dozens of miles in circumference, blue waves, reeds, both the kingdom of birds, but also a paradise for people; sand lake is a peculiar natural geomorphic composition, it is surrounded by desert, no river injection, whether it is rainy or long drought, the lake surface water level rarely rise and fall. This is a mystery to me, I do not know whether it has been cracked. Visitors who have been to Ningxia have two other humanistic sights that cannot be missed. One is the ancient built Xixia King’s Mausoleum, located at the foot of Helan Mountain, known as the pyramid of the East; there is a Xixia King’s Mausoleum Museum built here, he will tell you the historical rise and fall of the Xixia Dynasty. The other is a modern built film and television city, just outside of Yinchuan. A huge slogan hangs in front of its gate, “From here Chinese movies go to the world”, because “Red Gao Liang” was filmed here. Since then, more than sixty films have been produced in this film city, showing people the customs and history of the Northwest through the ages. If you have a chance to see the built human landscape, you may have some insight into how movies are shot in such artificial scenes. Our last stop of the trip was Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It is located in the middle of the Yinwu Plain, and has been a famous city on the Seaside since ancient times, once being the capital of the Western Xia Dynasty. Now it is the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of Ningxia, and is being built into an emerging industrial city in the northwest of China. In recent years, the old city, industrial area and new city have been connected to build a 50-mile long street — Beijing Avenue. On the eve of National Day, CCTV Heart to Heart Art Troupe came here to perform and the National Ethnic Games were held here. The two cultural events have added to the joyful and festive atmosphere of the National Day in Yinchuan. Stores were decorated with lights, flags fluttered on both sides of the street, Zhongshan Park was decorated with flowers, and Times Square was newly decorated; young couples held hands, men, women and children were entertained. Nightfall, downtown lights, the night sky twinkling fireworks, the interplay, the silver tree, Yinchuan really became a bright pearl. The hometown of wolfberry, really good place! I searched my guts and didn’t know how to describe it. Wang Bo’s famous phrase, “the natural treasures of the world, the people of the land”, is the best description of Ningxia. The Party Central Committee has decided to develop the northwest, and I believe that in a short time, the desert will become an oasis everywhere, and the scenery of Ningxia will become more beautiful. When the mountains and rivers are more beautiful, the sky will be lucky to revisit.
