Can cervical spine pain cause scalp pain?

Pain in the cervical spine can cause scalp pain because the small occipital nerve and the large auricular nerve, branches of the cervical plexus nerve, are located in the posterior occipital region. The terminal branch of the posterior branch of the cervical 2 nerve root, the greater occipital nerve, is also located in the posterior occipital region. Neck pain of discogenic origin due to degeneration of the upper cervical spine or neck pain of arthrographic origin can cause pain in the posterior occipital area due to reflex stimulation of the nerve, as well as pain in the back of the auricle. If the pain in the scalp area is manifested at the top of the head or the forehead, this condition is not related to the cervical spine and may be considered as an intracranial disease, cranial nerve disease or hypertension.
