Puffer fish poisoning is not a matter of minutes to die

Death from tetrodotoxin poisoning may occur after 10 minutes at the shortest, with an incubation period of 0.5-3 hours in most cases. Tetrodotoxin is a neurotoxin with strong toxicity and rapid onset, which requires prompt treatment such as vomiting, gastric lavage and rehydration. After consuming tetrodotoxin, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea may appear first; headache, numbness or tingling sensation in fingers, lips and tongue, weakness of limbs, slurred speech and limb paralysis may occur; some of them may show symptoms such as muscle paralysis of limbs or even general paralysis, loss of consciousness and difficulty in breathing, and serious cases may die due to respiratory failure. Tetrodotoxin is detoxified and excreted quickly in human body, and most of them can recover after timely treatment and rescue, and no serious symptoms appear 8 hours after the onset. It is recommended to avoid consuming puffer fish in life. If symptoms appear after consumption, you should promptly induce vomiting and go to the hospital emergency department for symptomatic treatment, gastric lavage, diarrhea and large amount of rehydration to relieve the symptoms of poisoning.
