Having major depression requires a formal course of antidepressant treatment, usually opting for inpatient treatment. The acute phase of treatment is the first stage of treatment, and antidepressant medication is chosen. Currently, 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant medication is generally considered. Tricyclic, tetracyclic or monoamine oxidase medications are no longer considered because they have more side effects. After adequate antidepressant treatment, the consolidation phase will be followed by a reduction of 1/3 of the dose according to the patient’s condition. Finally, the maintenance treatment will be reduced to the smallest effective dose of antidepressants according to the patient’s condition, and some psychological and physical treatments will be given during this period.
