The cause of spontaneous pneumothorax is mostly due to the rupture of large alveoli, and it is easy to recur. According to statistics, the possibility of recurrence of spontaneous pneumothorax within 2 years is 30-50%; after the first attack improves with conservative treatment, the recurrence rate is 45%; after the second attack still improves with conservative treatment, the recurrence rate rises to 75%; if the third attack occurs, the fourth attack is 100%. There are no specific triggers for spontaneous pneumothorax: more than 80% of patients are at rest or in a state of daily life at the time of spontaneous pneumothorax attack, and only about 9% of patients are in an exercise state. The traditional methods for treating spontaneous pneumothorax are: 1.thoracentesis: to extract the gas from the chest cavity; 2.closed chest drainage: that is, a small cut is made in the chest wall and a drainage tube is placed to draw out the gas; however, these two methods only have the effect of relieving the symptoms and do not solve the cause of pneumothorax – large alveoli, so it is easy to recur. 3.Open-chest surgery: Suture removal of alveoli can effectively cure spontaneous pneumothorax, but it is traumatic, painful and slow to recover; 4.Thoracoscopic surgery: It is the “gold standard” for treating spontaneous pneumothorax. It only requires 1-3 small incisions of 1.5-2cm in the chest wall to remove the alveoli and cure the spontaneous pneumothorax. Of course, it is less traumatic, less painful, quick recovery, and you can get out of bed on the same day after surgery, and you can be discharged from the hospital in 3-5 days.
