Friends often ask what is a good way to prevent hepatitis B. In fact, vaccination is the most effective means of prevention. Since the implementation of the hepatitis B vaccine program in China in 1992, the rate of hepatitis B virus infection and carriage has decreased significantly. In China, where nearly 10% of the population is infected with the hepatitis B virus, survey data from 2006 showed that the hepatitis B surface antigen carriage rate in people aged 1-59 years in six regions has been reduced to 7.18%; and the latest national sero-epidemiological survey of people aged 1-39 years released recently by the Chinese Center for Disease Control showed that the surface antigen positivity rate in the 1 -4 years old, 0.94% for 5-14 years old and 4.38% for 14-29 years old. These data suggest that hepatitis B vaccination has resulted in a significant reduction in the rate of hepatitis B virus infection in the population as a whole. And for individuals, hepatitis B vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent hepatitis B.
