Spleen Yang deficiency refers to the deficiency of spleen Yang, cold from within, dysfunction of transportation and transformation, loss of water and grain transportation, failure to transform water and dampness, etc. Also known as spleen deficiency cold evidence, the most common symptoms are low appetite and loose stools. The clinical manifestations are: poor appetite, easy abdominal distension, abdominal pain, preference for warmth and pressure, preference for hot water, cold extremities, especially at the end of the extremities. The face is pale or yellowish, without luster. Mouth is light and tasteless, not thirsty, or even with a feeling of stickiness. Small amount of urine, clear color. Increased frequency of stools, basically unformed, mostly loose stools, even containing undigested food. In women, it is often accompanied by a large amount of leucorrhea, clear and white in color, without odor. In severe Spleen-Yang deficiency, there is swelling of the lower extremities, a pale and dull tongue, a fatter tongue with teeth marks on the edges, and a white, watery tongue coating. In summary, when symptoms of Spleen-Yang deficiency appear, it is especially important to keep warm and not to eat too much cold food. The attack of cold from outside and the damage of the body’s Yang Qi from inside by over-eating raw cold can easily lead to Spleen-Yang deficiency evidence. Most of the clinical cases are regulated by using the Chinese medicine “Eucommia Rizhong Tang” or “Eucommia Rizhong Wan”. However, it must be used under the guidance of a clinician and should not be taken on its own. Proper exercise and more sunlight can be provided to replenish Yang energy.
