Patients with depression often have such symptoms as feeling that living is meaningless, painful and worse than death. If the patient has thoughts of death, it means that the depression is more serious and the patient has a higher risk of self-injury and suicide, which should be treated actively. The first step in treatment is to supervise the patient 24 hours a day to prevent the occurrence of self-injury and suicide, preferably in hospital. If the treatment is done at home, doors and windows should be closed, sharp instruments should be stored away, and ropes should be put away. At the same time, active medication, antidepressants or mood stabilizers, antipsychotic drugs, should be started as early as possible, and should be used for an adequate duration of treatment. At the same time, if the patient has good compliance and is willing to cooperate with psychotherapy, the patient should be given regular psychological counseling to guide the patient to vent bad emotions and discuss their views on life and death.
