Introduction to Liver Transplantation

When liver disease from various causes is advanced and life-threatening, surgical procedures are used to remove the diseased liver, which has lost its function, and then implant a healthy, viable liver into the person to save the life of the endangered patient. Liver transplantation is an important technique for the treatment of end-stage liver disease, and it allows patients with advanced liver disease to regain a new lease of life in a desperate situation. In principle, transplantation can be considered for all acute or chronic liver diseases that cannot be cured by other medical and surgical methods and where death is not expected to be avoided in a short period of time (6-12 months).
