Trachoma is a chronic infectious conjunctival keratitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, which is called trachoma because of its rough and uneven appearance on the conjunctival surface, resembling grains of sand. In the early stages of the disease, there is infiltration of the conjunctiva, such as papillae, follicular hyperplasia, and corneal vascular opacification; in the late stages, scarring of the affected lid conjunctiva leads to inversion of the eyelid, which aggravates the damage to the cornea and can seriously affect vision and even cause blindness. Before liberation, trachoma was the primary cause of blindness in China, but after liberation, under the care of the Party and government, extensive prevention and treatment of trachoma was carried out.
